Brand Profile

The Joya de Nicaragua brand was practically dead when brand owner Alejandro Martinez-Cuenca turned back the clock and released a cigar that tasted like the strong Joya de Nicaragua cigars of the 1970s. The Joya de Nicaragua Antano was a huge hit, but the ligero-loaded cigar was too strong for many smokers. The company turned to Manuel Quesada of the Dominican Republic to tame the blend. The result is the Joya de Nicaragua Celebracion line, which is robust but more balanced and elegant than the Antano. If the Joya Antano is a bull, the Joya Celebracion is a stallion. The wrappers are grown from criollo seed, and the 6 7/8-inch, 48-ring gauge Churchill is a bargain, selling for only $4.50. Production of the Churchill, which debuted in mid-2004, has since risen to over 50,000 cigars.

Joya De Nicaragua Celebracion cigars are Nicaraguan puros sporting an all Nicaraguan Habano seed filler & binder with a milder Habano Criollo wrapper delivering smooth and mellow smoke, yet with a complexity and plenty of flavor in a medium-bodied smoke. Cigar aficionados looking for a full-flavored cigar with plenty of depth and no harshness will enjoy Joya De Nicaragua Celebracion cigars.

In the 1970s, the Joya de Nicaragua cigar brand was considered one of the finest not only in Nicaragua, but in the entire world. It was actually created in Nicaragua's first cigar factory founded in 1964, Joyas were smoked by US Presidents and renowned for their rich and full flavor. But decades of war and Communist rule in Nicaragua destroyed the Joya de Nicaragua cigar brand and decimated the cigar factory and much of the rest of the country for that matter. Nicaragua has since been on the rise again, and fittingly, so is the Joya de Nicaragua cigar brand.

Joya de Nicaragua cigar brand was created at the end of the 1960's, where Caribbean experts started the tobacco cultivation a few years earlier with the purpose of supplying fillers and cigar wrappers to American manufacturers. The tobacco demand from America was not up to expectations, so the solution was to open a cigar factory and export cigars manufactured in Nicaragua to the United States. The idea was supported by the Nicaraguan government that created a program of assistance for the tobacco growers of the northern region of the country.

The economic potential of this industry immediately drew the attention of President Somoza in such a way that he decided to become the main shareholder of the Nicaragua Cigars Company, the first cigar factory in Central America that was created at the beginning of 1968. Thus the first Nicaraguan cigar brand was born under the name of Joya de Nicaragua, the Jewel of Nicaragua.

Joya De Nicaragua, S.A., is a family owned, Nicaragua-based cigar factory that handcrafts traditional cigars for the premium luxury cigar market. First opened in 1968, it is Nicaragua’s eldest factory in operation and home to the legendary Joya De Nicaragua cigars.  Joya De Nicaragua is regarded by many as the patriarch crafter of robust, unique puro blends of locally grown black tobaccos.

I rate it 4 stars because of the value to price ratio. This is a very good smoke but when you think of the price it jumps up a star. Great construction, nice burn and very nice earthy flavour that gets creamy and mild through the middle. I transfered 5 to my larger humidor for some aging. They should get even better.

Can't beat this stick for the value. If you smoke more than one per day, this should be the one. Complex earthy taste from start to finish. Somewhat loose draw, but gave tons of smoke with an always perfect burn. Didn't want to let it go out.
